FINCA CERRO NARA
Located in the Cerro Nara Zona Protectora of Costa Rica. Adjacent to
the
four wheel drive public road, with a private, gated road leading to the
Lodge. Full time caretakers live in a house near the gate. Annual
rainfall
is 300 inches. Dry season is January, February, and March.
THE LODGE was built several years ago, consisting of the first floor
made of
ironwood post and beam from a fallen tree on the property, and the
second
floor bamboo post and beam bought from a sustainable source. At a
cooler,
2,800 ft. above sea level, it boasts a year round water supply from a
natural spring about 150 feet above the house. Power is a hydroelectric
system, with batteries, an inverter, and backup generator.
It has 4-bedrooms, a large upstairs party room with 6 speaker Sony surround, and
absolutely massive views of the west coast, lands and cities below,
including the Rio Naranjo. Hot water supplies the kitchen, bath, and
shower
via On Demand propane system. There is an out building workshop. There
is a
seven pond waterway within 150 feet of the house, including a bathing
pool,
which is supplied by a natural spring at its head.
THE LAND: starting from the very top of Cerro Nara Mountain, it goes
south
east down to the bottom of of Cerro Nara Valley along the Llano Grande
River
and encompasses 503 acres. Most of the land has primary rainforest.
There
are at least 8 natural springs and many waterfalls, including the
spectacular center piece 220 foot waterfall, which is a 40 minute
downhill
hike from the house to the top, and another 20 minutes to the bottom.
Above
the big waterfall exists an array of waterways, cascades, and scenery
as
spectacular as any on the planet.
ANALOG FORESTRY was begun five years ago in the 85 acre plateau area
about a
10 minute hike from the house. Five years ago seven hundred trees
(hardwoods
and fruits) were planted, and about 500 now survive. Shade grown coffee
will
be planted in this area next year. Many more trees and plants have been
started on other parts of the property, following the design of Dr.
Renil
Senanayake, renowned for his expertise in Analog Forestry.
ANIMAL LIFE is prolific. Monkeys, such as Mono Titi, Mono Colorado, and
Mono
Congo now have a better chance for survival since a wild life corridor
has
been opened up last year, which runs from Manuel Antonio National Park,
up
the Rio Naranjo (in cooperation with property owners there) all the way
to
the top of Cerro Nara! Animals will now be able to migrate between
these
locations. Due to diligent caretaking animal life is on the serious
rise.
There are Tepezquintle (large rodent somewhat like giant guinea pigs),
Sainas (wild boar), several medium and large cats, such as Jaguar,
mountain
lion, and lynx, sloth, aguti (looks like a raccoon), Perros de la
Montana
(looks like black panther, but is a wild dog), turkeys, many birds and
butterflies, iguanas, lizards, and snakes. Vipers are mostly nocturnal.
Mosquitos are not nearly the problem that people think.
CARBON SEQUESTERING PROGRAM: The property participates and gets annual
checks from the Costa Rican Government for maintaining, preserving, and
enhancing the rainforest.
VISITORS are welcome to make arrangements with me for spending time at
the
Lodge for moderate fees. Or you may tie in a visit with ecoera.org
